The War of the Elements was a conflict that took place on Antagarich and in the Elemental Planes, and is shown in Heroes Chronicles: Masters of the Elements.
When the world of Enroth was created, the gods forced the elemental lords into a 10,000-year truce. When the truce ended, the elemental lords planned to separate the elements, thus destroying Enroth. The Ancestors sent Tarnum to Bracada, tasking him with stopping them.
Instead of waiting for the elemental lords to arrive, Tarnum decided to strike first, so he led the Wizards in an attack on the world's only remaining Conflux. Through it, he and his group made their way to the Plane of Air, but eventually realized that he had made a dreadful mistake: the elemental lords had already left to begin their attack, and he had no way of returning to Enroth.
As they passed through the Elemental Planes in order, two of Tarnum's advisors - Barsolar and Reamus - postulated the existence of a fifth Elemental Plane, the Plane of Magic, and thus the existence of magic elementals that could be used to fight the other elementals. They constructed a device that allowed them to contact the Plane of Magic, and a psychic elemental told them to seek the aid of The First, the rulers of the plane. Tarnum's group entered the plane and forged an alliance with The First.
With the aid of the magic elementals, Tarnum and his men returned to Enroth, where the elemental lords had begun their attack. Gavin Magnus sent Bracada's forces to assist Tarnum, who managed to drive the elemental lords back to their respective planes. Believing that mastery over all elements was too great a power for anyone to wield responsibly, tarnum convinced the psychic elementals to remove all knowledge about how to reach the Elemental Planes from the minds of those who had traveled there.
