Vogel Backbreaker is a campaign-only Barbarian hero from Heroes of Might and Magic IV, appearing as the main villain in the Glory of Days Past campaign.

Background[]

"Watchout! Vogel will break your back like he has many others, do not piss him off."
—Vogel's description from A King's Choice

"Watchout or Vogel will break your back like he did Tarnums!"
—Vogel's description from One Tribe

Vogel is first mentioned in the A Necessary War scenario, where he is the more powerful of two mighty warlords attempting to plunder Waerjak's lands. His warriors fight Waerjak, and he manages to capture Waerjak's foster father Tarnum, but Vogel himself does not make an appearance.

In the next scenario, A King's Choice, Vogel appears with a single Stronghold. He's a level 16 general, and not hard to overcome, but if Waerjak or his forces attack him, they lose the scenario.

Instead of freeing his foster father, Waerjak must rescue the warlord Hundric's Barbarian slaves, as there isn't enough time to save both. As Waerjak moves against Hundric, Vogel drags Tarnum after his horse, crushes his arms and legs with a mallet, breaks his back, and tosses him down into a ravine. He then brags that Waerjak will suffer a similar fate.

Vogel's final appearance is in the One Tribe scenario. After Hundric has been defeated, Waerjak can turn his attention to Vogel, and their armies clash. Vogel can be found near his underground Stronghold. He's a level 29 general, with Grandmaster Combat, Melee, and Archery, Master Tactics and Magic Resistance, Advanced Offense, Defense, and Estates, and Basic Nobility and Mining. He's equipped with a Sniper's Crossbow, a Poison Arrow, a Dwarven Shield, and a Plate Mail, and has a large force of Stronghold creatures.

Vogel did not survive his encounter with Waerjak.
