Vitross is a town that appears in the Eater of Children scenario of the Half-Dead campaign in Heroes of Might and Magic IV. Gauldoth was almost burned to death here, but managed to escape. He then returned with an army of undead to destroy the town.

History[]

Vitross was located on the eastern border of Great Arcan. While hiding in the wilderness, Gauldoth plundered a chicken coop near the town, but was caught. The farmers accused him of murdering a lost child, and the commander of the town, Sir Mardor, prepared to burn him at the stake. Gauldoth tried to tell them that he hadn't killed anything but a few chickens, but they ignored his pleas. As Mardor brought a torch to light the bundles of wood at Gauldoth's feet, the necromancer managed to get his hand free, and cast a spell that would slow the people down long enough for him to run away.

Gauldoth ran far into the wilderness, and after a few days, he stumbled upon a graveyard. Full of rage for the way he had been treated, Gauldoth used his necromancy to raise the dead from their graves. He decided to return to Vitross, destroy the town, and take his revenge on the populace.

Gauldoth burned Vitross to the ground, and tied Mardor to a stake. He told him that he would burn him to death, then raise him as a ghost to serve as his military commander. He also told Mardor that he was innocent of the crimes he had been accused for. "I was not responsible for any deaths, save those of the chickens. Great Arcan, as young a nation as it is, has earned respect for its fair laws. Tell me, where was that justice for me?"

To avoid having Great Arcan take revenge for the loss of their town, Gauldoth made his zombies kill every farmer and woodsman in the area. The only survivor would be Captain Ethric, one of Mardor's commanders, who promised to tell Queen Emilia that the town had been destroyed by barbarians if Gauldoth turned him into an immortal vampire. This way, no one ever learned about Vitross' true fate.
