The Tree of Knowledge is an adventure map structure in the Heroes of Might and Magic series. The Tree will provide an extra level for any hero that visits it, usually at a cost.
Trees of Knowledge grant experience equal to the amount needed to go from the current level to the next, ignoring any experience the hero already has. That means there's no downside to visiting the tree when already close to a level, as the excess experience will carry over. However, it's beneficial to visit the Tree when already at a high level, as the experience needed to reach the next level at that point will be much greater.
In Heroes II and Heroes III, the Tree will demand either 2000 gold or 10 gems for the level-up, and also has a chance to provide it for free. Each tree's price is chosen at random at the start of the game, and will remain the same for each hero that visits it. In Heroes IV, the Tree of Knowledge will demand either 2500 gold or 5 gems in order to give the hero the level. In Olden Era, the Tree of Knowledge is always free.
A similar structure in Heroes V with the same effect is called the Sylanna's Ancients.
The structure's equivalent in Heroes VI is called the Shrine of the Seventh Dragon, although it has a fixed price of 11000 Gold and 7 Crystal instead of a random price.
