"Demons invade us? Irollan shall not succumb to their fiery swords!"
Findan, after Biara captures the garrison

The Refugees is the first scenario in The Ranger campaign.

Walkthrough[]

Markal and Isabel arrived to the Hall of Heroes. Markal used his power and the artifacts they collected to revive King Nicolai. Nicolai is not impressed from being torn from Elrath, going to attack Isabel. Markal stops him and leaves the Hall of Heroes alone with a terrified Isabel and a vengeful Nicolai.

In Irollan, however, people from Holy Griffin Empire began to take place in the woods. Their leader, Lord Caldwell, asks the High King Alaron to stay there. Alaron knows well the risks that Markal will sends his forces to occupy Irollan, but Findan reminds him that they are their allies. Alaron agrees to give them shelter and asks Findan to be their guide, though he reminds him that he shouldn't cross the border.

There will be 3 Necromancers who will attack the borders: Raven, Lucretia and Vladimir. Both are a challenge to the garrison troops, but if played right, they can be deflected. If any of them capture a garrison, Findan will have to retake it (defeating the 50 skeleton archers inside) and place an ancient treant inside, otherwise Markal's forces will overrun the area. Each one spawns each week or so. While they are busy attacking the border, Findan can visit the places to learn - some are south and some are east of Damlad.

At the 2nd month, 2nd week, a Demon Lord named Biara will come and enter Irollan. She will breach the defenses, but Findan will have to ignore to take back the garrison, as the force is powerful. Because of this, Findan had to prepare the town of Damlad for the assault. Findan can allow Biara to strike there, if waited long enough. After he defeats her, a sprite messanger will arrive with an order from High King Alaron to abandon the border, as he has some plans Findan needs to attend to.

Strategy[]

This scenario is pretty much about building defenses. There might be a lack of resources, but around are many mines which Findan will have to capture. When Biara comes, Findan will have to strike her prepared, or at least be struck at.

Bugs[]

It is quite possible that the garrisons will not be attacked by Necromancers - their forces might be taken by Orson (another Necromancer who spawns on the map already). At rare occasions, Biara might not spawn, so the player will have to restart the scenario anew. Each garrison will be attacked only one time - none of the garrisons will be attacked by necromancers twice.

If the pathfinding just won't succeed, Biara can be teleported to the front of the castle to be fought right away via @SetObjectPosition("Biara", 109, 109). She won't get to fight a garrison on her way in this case.

Biara is supposed to spawn on Month 2 Week 1 Day 2. Damlad tavern can be used to check if the red player has a hero to determine whether she has showed up. Even if she's there, the AI script may fail to find a path towards Damlad, and the pathfinding seems to be only performed when she is spawned. If the search fails, Biara will not budge (and the player cannot attack her on enemy territory). In that case, an error will be logged in the game console: (Script) ERROR: Can't find path for hero "Biara" to cell [108, 118] on floor #0. The path destination is Damlad, and it must not run into any of the player's heroes, otherwise it is not considered. Even having a hero stationed at Damlad entrance will fail the script. (Stationing the hero inside the garrison is fine.) The search script executed seems to be @MoveHero("Biara", 108, 118); — it can be manually executed to try to find the path again if the initial search failed.

If Biara did not appear, she remains in red player's reserve and can be spawned at the intended spot via @DeployReserveHero("Biara", 31, 10, 0). Note: this script will not progress the scenario objectives, but it can be used to then make her head for the town with the aforementioned path search script, defeating her and ending the scenario with a @Win command. That way, even if the adventure map scripts get messed up so badly that the game does not progress to fighting off Biara, the scenario can be more or less properly finished without replaying it. When deployed manually, Biara's troops will not be adjusted by game difficulty, unlike when she spawns correctly on her own.
