"It is a frightening world out there, deadly even, but hiding is no way to deal with it. Not everyone understood that, so Lord Lysander expected trouble when we marched into the isolationist territory known as the Wheel. But even he didn't know just how hard they would fight."

The First Step of Many is the third scenario in The True Blade campaign of Heroes of Might and Magic IV.

Walkthrough[]

The Oracle of the Dawn's words bring Lysander to the Wheel. This independent region gels its name from the numerous water wheels built on the banks of its crisscrossing rivers. The barons of the Wheel are stubborn isolationists who don't care about what happens to Palaedra, but if Lysander is going to uncover the truth about Sir Worton's bloodline, he must face them and find the proverbial needle in the haystack.OffBck

After the meeting with the Oracle, Lysander has to seek Worton's parents through the region named as Wheel. However, the lords of the Wheel are not forgiving, since the Reckoning cost them much. Lysander knows they will attack him on sight, since they don't support him at all. During a quick visit at the nearest tavern, Proetho learns that Worton visited the Wheel and had troops build a garrison, where beyond it lives a woman.

In the Wheel, Lysander and companions soon find out about a woman named Desette, Sir Worton's mother, guarded beyond Glen Garrison. They are greatly helped in this by two smiths, Mott and Bawdo, who used to work for the garrison, who report that the leader of Glen Garrison, Captain Ferth, always wanted to cut their prices when he was buying weapons and armor.

As Milton comes to a small village to show a pair of boys he can kick the ball quite far, he was ambushed and gave order to attack before he passed out. When he wakes up, Lysander is worried because Milton could've died. Milton apologises, but does not know why did he want to kick the ball away. Lysander's party manages eventually to reach Glen Garrison, but they don't dare to get close, afraid that the garrison's captain, Ferth, would kill Desette rather than let her fall in the wrong hands.

Near the bridge that leads to the nearest town, Lysander may find a prison with a high level imprisoned hero who will join the party if rescued. Lysander instead uses a magical portal that leads them unseen beyond Glen Garrison. The party finds the portal and Lysander meets Lady Desette. She meets them and Lysander asks if she had sons. She responds she had two: the older son died, while the younger's name is Worton. She will join the party as a hero in the following scenarios.

Strategy[]

The heroes need to be quick, as with four different enemies they can assemble an army quite fast, so they need to capture at least six towns before gathering the army for the last two.

The heroes Lysander, Proetho and Desette will proceed to the next scenario, as well as the next two strongest heroes.

Bugs[]

It is possible upon clicking on the gate guard in south (near the portal) for the game to crash. If not, the gate does not offer any info.
