The Beowulf Tales: Part One is a scenario in Heroes of Might and Magic IV.
Walkthrough[]
A famous warrior from the north, Beowulf, had answered King Hrothgar's call for a hero. King Hrothgar's soldiers were slain by a creature named Grendel at Heorot Hall. Beowulf came to the land to slain this beast. Once Beowulf lands the ship, Heorot's Hall joins under his leadership. South of Hrothgar's Hall is the Heorot Hall, which is occupied by a strong force. Once captured, Beowulf notices Grendel has moved away. Beowulf has to continue north-east, to defeat thunderbirds and build a ship. Once done, Beowulf sails south-east (and defeats sea monsters and mermaids), then unlock the quest guard (which requires Hrothgar's Hall and Heorot Hall to be in Beowulf's control).
Beowulf has to continue south and defeat the forces of Asylum named Blackbog, only to find the beast fled into the caves below. Once the mantises at the underground entrance have been defeated, Beowulf has to go north, where two quest gates await him. The eastern one requires Beowulf to have Blackbog in his control, which guards another Asylum named the Lurker's Den. It is required to be captured to unlock the western quest guard. Between those quest guards is a Seer's Hut, which needs a Gem Casket (found south-east of it) to give 10 cyclopes.
Once prepared, Beowulf should seek out Grendel behind the western quest guard. Beowulf has to defeat him and his army of cyclopses, black dragons, behemoths and berserkers. Once done, Beowulf cuts off his arm, but little does Beowulf realize that Grendel's mother is furious and wants retribution for her son.
Strategy[]
There are two one-way monoliths that allows the enemy to go into Beowulf's land. As such, Beowulf must not lose too much forces, else the enemy will overwhelm him. It is wise to build up an army and attack Heorot Hall, enabling a further creature production. Note that the quest guard north of Blackbog requires both Heorot Hall and Hrothgar's Hall to be in Beowulf's command, so the enemy must not capture them until the gate is unlocked. Afterwards, Beowulf needs to attack the Lurker's Den to stop the attacks, then gain enough experience and troops to defeat Grendel.
Trivia[]
The story is a reference to the poem Beowulf. In the poem, however, Hrothgar's soldiers were devoured by Grendel, who was hurt by the soldiers' singing, after Heorot Hall was built. Also, Beowulf faced Grendel in Heorot Hall, instead of a cave.
