Various Terrains found in Heroes III

Terrain is what your hero walks across in the Heroes of Might and Magic games.

  • Grass is universal and is a vibrant green, found almost anywhere and typically houses the human and nature factions, as well as Conflux in Heroes III.
  • Dirt is usually brown, sometimes representing dead land or dry forests. Necropolis is almost always native to this terrain.
  • Sand is a yellow-brown terrain that represents deserts or beaches. Desert appeared as a unique terrain type in I and II, but they are not distinct in any other game. This terrain is neutral in games in the Ancient universe, while Academy is native to this terrain in games set on Ashan.
  • Snow, also referred to as Taiga, is a gentle white, housing Tower and Academy in III and IV, while home to Fortress in Ashan.
  • Swamps are blue and green in appearance and inflicts a severe movement penalty to cross. It houses the Warlocks in I, II, and IV, and Fortress in III.
  • Wasteland is dry, orange, rocky land that only appears in Heroes II, where it was the home terrain of Wizards.
  • Rough land is a medium brown and has lots of cracks, giving the appearance of desert, housing Strongholds in most games.
  • Subterranean is usually dirt-colored and is almost exclusively found in the Subterranean level, and it is always the native terrain of the Dungeon.
  • Lava, also called Volcanic, is a blackened rock that houses Inferno in all games and Necropolis in IV.
  • Water is a terrain and can be found anywhere. It's a dark blue, and uniquely can only be traversed with a boat or by Sanctuary creatures in VI.
  • Rock appears as a solid black area and signals where there is no land, usually used with the Subterranean to give the feeling of caverns. It cannot be crossed by anything.
