Heroes III subterranean gate

Heroes III subterranean gate

"Some maps contain a subterranean level. Heroes may enter subterranean gates to pass between the surface and the underground."
—Heroes III manual

The subterranean gate, or tunnel, is a gameplay element that first appeared in Heroes III, and has been in every game since. It is used to travel between the surface and the subterranean level.

Any hero that enters a subterranean gate on the surface will instantly be taken to the corresponding exit underground, and vice versa. There are other ways to travel between the surface and the underground, like monoliths or whirlpools, but the subterranean gate is exclusively used for this purpose. Attempting to use a subterranean gate that has no nearby exit (or on a map with no subterranean level) will display a failure message and have no other effect.

In Heroes IV, the structure is called a tunnel, while in every other game, it's referred to as a subterranean gate.
