The ritual was described in the Book of Liches. It was considered one of the most difficult magical rites to perform, due to the mental and physical anguish involved in giving up your humanity. It was said that only the most greedy, ambitious, or heartless could overcome this strain.
According to rumor, Ethric was the first sorcerer to discover the ritual, becoming the world's first lich and the first necromancer at the same time. Gabriel Cartman believed that by studying Ethric's remains, he might be able to reverse the ritual's effects.
