All heroes attain ability in the four Primary Skills — Attack, Defense, Spell Power and Knowledge. Martially oriented heroes, like Knights and Rangers, will have their Attack and Defense skills advance more rapidly. Magic heroes, like Wizards and Necromancers, will more often gain Power and Knowledge.
In the Heroes of Might and Magic series, the Attack skill is a parameter of heroes and creatures that defines their ability to cause damage. While it doesn't directly affect the damage output delivered in combat, it serves as a main modifier when calculating the amount of breakage caused.
The Attack skill acts differently from game to game, and is subject to analysis in each title's appropriate section.
Defense reduces the damage that the hero's creatures will take in combat. It is the opposite of attack, which increases the damage that the hero's creatures do.
Spellpower increases the effect of the hero's spells, like the damage they do in combat, or how much they heal, or how long curses or blessings last. It is one of the two magic skills, the other being knowledge.
Some skills, like sorcery, increase the damage done by spells.
Knowledge determines the number of spell points the hero has. It is one of the two magic skills, the other being spellpower.
