Might and Magic Wiki
For other uses, see mercenary.

"Mercenaries are professional fighters. They rarely do anything without financial reward tied to the end of it. Do not underestimate them, however, for they have dedicated themselves to studying the art of melee. They have foregone the use of magic in favour of greater skill in arms and armour. As Mercenaries grow in experience, they will again face a choice – whether to specialise as an Assassin, the paid killer of men, or as a Gladiator, for whom fighting is an art."

The Mercenary is a might class in Might and Magic IX. It is one of the two promotions of the Fighter, the other being the Crusader. Mercenaries can't use magic, but their ultimate promotions are more skilled melee combatants than the Crusader ones.

If they complete the quest from Atli the Quick, Mercenaries can be promoted to Assassins, which strike the enemy with blades and thrown weapons, and can disarm traps better than anyone.

If they instead complete the quest from Fridleif Gjukissen, they can be promoted to Gladiators, which are experts with blades, spears, and shields, and rely on high hit points and damage to cut their opponent down.
