Maahir's Gambit is a scenario in Heroes of Might and Magic V.

Walkthrough[]
Maahir has been sent to deal with Belketh's apprentice, Zoltan, and to retrieve the 4 relics stolen from the Silver Cities.
The relics will be found on 4 different paths. The first one is on grass (the Staff), the second on lava (the Crown), the third on dirt (the Ring) and the fourth on sand (the Robe). Afterwards, Maahir needs to defeat Zoltan (if not done already). Zoltan may be found in his Necropolis far to the west.
Alyad infroms Maahir that one of the Wizards from First of the Circle has retired, so he offers him a place among them, to which Maahir accepts.

Strategy[]
Maahir can get a nice early bonus from a Sphinx, who lies south of Qays, provided he answers Spinx's question correctly. Also, flagging the mines and building the town should be his first priority.
Maahir needs to get one of the relics first, as Zoltan might be able to get all 4 relics in time. Afterwards, Maahir needs to prepare for Zoltan to come. Note that Zoltan can use the Instant Travel spell later in the game, so he will bypass the paths easily.
It would be good that Maahir visits the cartographer, who lies on lava path. It can be accessed via a teleporter, though it is guarded by Tier 7 creatures.

In some versions, Zoltan will get the artifacts, while in some he will simply pass by.
