Might and Magic Wiki

"The jail holds a particular hero hostage, who joins the side of the first player to free him or her."
—Heroes II manual

The jail, prison, or hero cage is an adventure map structure in the Heroes of Might and Magic games. First appearing in the Price of Loyalty, the jail holds a hero that will join the side of anyone who frees them. Rescuing a prisoner from a jail is sometimes one of the objectives of a scenario.

Any hero who approaches the jail will free the prisoner inside. The prisoner usually emerges with a few creatures, but in some scenarios, the prisoner can be high-level, with a very impressive army. These heroes tend to be guarded by a very large creature stack.

In Heroes IV, the prisoner usually emerges alone, and joins the rescuing hero's party.
