Description[]

Castle Harmondale is where your party, The Lords Of Harmondale, end up residing after winning the Scavenger Hunt on Emerald Island. Lord Markham said that it pained him to give the property away, but in his diary he wrote that he was glad to be rid of both it and the human-elvish conflict.

When the party first arrives, the butler greets them at the front door, saying that a bunch of goblins had moved in and refused to leave, forcing him to temporarily relocate to the local inn until the party could evict the goblins. The castle had decayed after at least a century and a half of neglect, and was in a state of ruin. At the start of their reign, there are several heaps of trash scattered around the castle, which can be picked for random treasure, though you need Perception to avoid getting diseased from it. Additionally, the Throne Room is blocked with a huge boulder, rendering it inaccessible, and there are several other boulders strewn around the castle.

The first thing to do is clear ALL the monsters from the castle. There are lots of goblins, rats, and bats all over the castle. Fortunately, you only have to deal with the ground floor; the basement, and upper floors, don't become accessible until after the first repair, and upgrade, respectively. Since there is no back hallway, that means having to go all the way around the horseshoe to get from one end of the back to the other.

Repair[]

Once the monsters are cleared out, the Butler sends you to Stone City. After doing a quest for the Dwarven King, he sends an engineer and construction crew, who clear the trash heaps and boulders out, and make the basement accessible. Down there is some random cheap treasure strewn around the jail and torture chamber, and also the start of a tunnel from under the bunk in one of the jail cells. At the end of this tunnel is random cheap treasure.

Also, after the repair, AvLee and Erathia both send ambassadors, who are found in the throne room, which is now accessible. The castle butler can also be found in the throne room. The ambassadors invite the party to visit their respective royalty, who each ask the party to do a quest for them. The butler just provides conversation about the castle itself.

After Judge Grey's death, Bracada and Deyja each send ambassadors, who are now found in the throne room, to recommend their Judge to replace the deceased Arbiter. The one that you pick determines whether you finish the game along the Light or Dark path.

Upgrade[]

After deciding which path you wish to follow and completing the proving quest for them, the castle is once again upgraded, this time with an upper level. There are some bedrooms up there, as well as a room with several chests of random treasure. There's also a library upstairs which has a scroll on cryptography, which may be useful in solving the cipher for one of the quests on the dark path. Additionally, four shops open up in the main area in front of the throne room: a weapon smith, an armor smith, a healing temple, and an alchemist. After this upgrade, the only one you'll find in the throne room will be the butler, who talks about the upgrade to the castle.

After the castle is repaired the first time, the chests can be used for storing items, as the castle will no longer respawn. Also, resting in the castle after it's repaired uses no food, although it is possible to have a random encounter of monsters attack your party while you rest, even after the repairs and upgrades.
