"The Mudlanders finally broke past the Erathian borders into the unnamed swamps beyond, but they ran directly into Mad King Gryphonheart's advance forces. Knowing that this was only a small portion of Gryphonheart's army, Tarnum searched for a new ally."

Beyond the Borders is the sixth scenario in Revolt of the Beastmasters, the seventh part of Heroes Chronicles.

Tarnum must defeat Mad King Gryphonheart's vanguard forces quickly before they receive reinforcements. All Heroes will be limited to level 30, but Tarnum and his two best Captains will transfer to the next scenario.OffBck

When Tarnum's army left the Erathian lands and entered the swamp, they discovered why Mad King Gryphonheart hadn't entered the battle himself: he'd marched his forces around Tarnum's soldiers to stop them from escaping. The rebels were surrounded, outnumbered ten to one, and Mad King Gryphonheart wasn't taking prisoners.

At first, Tarnum was only facing his vanguard, but even then, his men were outnumbered. But the Mad King sent his troops to attack in the middle of the night, despite the fact that the Mudlanders could see far better than the Erathians in the dark. Every man in the strike force was killed or fled for his life, and Tarnum realized that the darkness could be an ally. He told his men to make nighttime raids against the Erathian camps. The Mudlanders inflicted more than four times their number in casualties, and Tarnum knew that as long as he kept up the attacks, the Erathians would never feel safe, and their morale would be destroyed.

Adamina and the other wisewomen showed Tarnum their suggestions for Mudlander laws. They were similar to the unwritten laws of the barbarians that Tarnum had grown up with, but with stricter rules against slavery. Tarnum told her that he was thinking about naming Droglo as his second, but he'd like their approval first. She told him they would think about it.

In order to gain allies, Tarnum sent Droglo in secret to the barbarians, asking for an alliance. He returned days later with a serious wound on his face and told Tarnum that they had forced him to duel one of their best warriors, which Tarnum knew was a serious violation of barbarian custom - if they wanted to test Tarnum's strength, they would duel him, not his messenger. The barbarians demanded twice the payment that Tarnum had offered, and said that if he didn't pay, perhaps the Erathians would. Tarnum felt ashamed at the mercenary attitude of his people, particuarly since he was personally responsible for their bloodthirst and dishonorable ways.

With his superior tactics, Tarnum managed to defeat Mad King Gryphonheart's vanguard.

Walkthrough[]

Tarnum and his two strongest heroes from the previous scenario start out with a Fortress in the southwestern part of the map. The enemy has two Castles, one in the northwestern part of the map and one in the northeastern one, but no starting forces.

Since the enemy starts with no heroes or creatures, a quick build-up will let Tarnum capture one of the enemy towns. The northeastern one is easier to reach. With more creatures and income than his opponent, taking out the last Castle will be easy.

Strategy[]

Unlike previous scenarios, neutral gnolls and lizardmen will no longer join Tarnum's army, so it will take slightly longer to build up forces.
