"The final artifact needed to construct the Elixir of Life is in the undead hands of the Vampire Lord Vokial. It is said the Vial of Lifeblood allows him to sustain himself without having to resort to more distasteful means of bloodletting. Although this artifact can be said to be preventing some evil where it is, our need for the Vial is even more desperate. You must find a way to steal the Vial from this Vampire. But keep in mind that not every task need be accomplished by direct means. Use your training wisely and stay sharp."
—Introduction
A Thief in the Night is the fourth and final scenario of the Elixir of Life campaign in Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death.
Walkthrough[]
Steal the Vial of Lifeblood from the Vampire Lord Vokial to create the Elixir of Life and win the campaign. However, if Gelu is defeated in combat, the scenario is lost. Gelu is limited to level 25 but will carry his experience, skills and spells on to his next campaign.OffBck
The last component of the Elixir of Life, the Vial of Lifeblood, is held by the vampire lord, Vokial. Vokial finds it distasteful to drink blood of living beings and has the vial to satisfy his hunger. Gelu is ordered to take the vial and humiliate Vokial, who will have to resort to "traditional" methods. Vokial lies in Deyja, with three Necropolis towns under his control. The method to obtain the vial is to visit the thieves' guild, located at the seer's hut in northeast. They promise to obtain the vial, in exchange for Titan's Gladius and Sentinel's Shield, both artifacts, which lie in Deyjan lands.
As Gelu continues his quest to obtain the vial, he receives word of Lord Falorel, who is pleased by Gelu's progress and gives him reward of 2500 gold. If Gelu goes to the west, he can find a Rampart town, beyond a garrison (which is guarded by 130 wood elves, 40 silver pegasi and 50 dendroid guards). Gelu must be cautious, since the enemy will strike at his garrisons in the first month. Gelu must focus on his mission and go to south, where a blue keymaster tent awaits him (since the quest guard asks for Gelu to unlock the tower). Gelu will have to speed up to north, as beyond the lightblue border gate lie two portals, who lead to the location where the Titan's Gladius and Shield of the Sentinel are. However, both are guarded by red and black dragons, as well as quest guards, who ask only the green player to pass. Close to them are green and brown keymaster tents, which can allow Gelu to creep onto the two nearby Necropolis towns.
Once the artifacts are required, Gelu has to go back to the thieves' guild and give them the artifacts. The guild gives him the Vial of Lifeblood, which, with the Ring of Life and Vitality, transforms into Elixir of Life. Gelu completes his mission, promising to defend AvLee from its enemies.
Towns[]
- Rampart x3
- Necropolis x3
Strategy[]
Gelu has to mass an army to fight against Vokial. Luckily, if Gelu has the third Rampart, he is matched with the enemy, concerning the number of towns. Enemies will attack the garrison and wander the land, so it is up to Gelu to defeat their towns and heroes, before continuing on. Despite being mentioned as Vokial having the vial, the only way to obtain it is to complete the quest from the seer's hut. Gelu is limited to 25th level.
